Notice the plural in the post’s headline?
Our annual tradition at ranchero de Zero Hour! has been to rollout a slice of micro-fictional creepiness to coincide with the Great Pumpkin’s reign of terror on the countryside. If you missed it in past years, check out the archives for the 2010 Halloween offering here, 2011 version here, and 2012’s addition to the ranks here.
So this year, we thought we would change it up a little.
Instead of one creepy story, you’ll get at least two, and potentially more. Because we’re hosting (cue drum roll):
The Episodes from the Zero Hour! First Annual Halloween Flash Fiction Showdown!
And this year’s theme? Werewolves!
So, I came up with an idea for a great werewolf story. Previous Zero Hour! Halloween stories focused on ghosts, nature spirits, the vengeful dead, vampires and zombies (I gave you the links, go read them for yourselves!) so I thought, wouldn’t a good wolf story be nice to add to the mix. I harangued Anthony to go along, and he came up with his own great idea.
So when the blood moon (or midday sun, whatever) is high on Halloween, we will unleash our twin creations upon an unsuspecting world! And you’ll all be doomed! DOOOOOMED! MWAHAHAHA!
But remember how I said “at least two” a few paragraphs prior? This is where you come in.
Anthony and I are brilliant-minded writers, no doubt… But we don’t have a monopoly on excellent werewolf fiction. So we’re encouraging you, the Zero Hour! faithful, to break out your scribble books, and come up with your own flash fiction wolf stories to add to the pot.
Here are the rules:
- Stories should be between 1,000 and 1,500 words. You go over by a few, or under by a few, that’s fine, but if you’re looking to ensnare readers into checking out your erotic werewolf novel, this isn’t the place (for so many reasons);
- Stories are to be hosted on your own website, and we will provide a space to link to your site. Don’t have a site? Write to us using the email form on the page and we’ll see if we can work something out;
- Stories should, obviously, have a werewolf or more than one werewolf in them;
- We’re not prudes. I mean, we’ve seen some shit. But anything that really, REALLY stretches the boundaries of good taste will be removed from our links.
And there you have it.
On Halloween, we will post my story, Anthony’s story and the Flash Fiction hub as separate posts. You can leave a link to your story in the comments of mine or Anthony’s, but the hub is really where those links should go.
At the end of it all, whoever has the most likes will be dubbed alpha dog / alpha bitch for the year! We might even make a crown.
So start stretching those writing muscles. Halloween is a week away, and I want to see some bad-ass stories involving lycanthropy!
Can’t wait to see what you all come up with!
